Do you like to stay involved with fine arts? Do you want to provide a valuable service? Would you like to contribute to the education of today’s youth?
Fine arts judges are needed in speech, debate, one act play, music, and visual arts. If you love fine arts, have a “feel” for the contests, and possess basic knowledge of the rules, you can be a judge.
The information necessary to register as a MSHSL judge is listed below. To be fully registered you must complete the registration process, attend a clinic, and the pass the rules test. Visual arts and debate judges
do not have to take a test or attend a clinic. Judges are a valuable part of high school fine arts – you are needed and MSHSL member schools value your services!

Speech, Music and One Act Play Judge Requirements and Qualifications:
The Judge must meet the following minimum requirements and qualifications to be a registered MSHSL speech, one act play, debate and music judge:
- The Judge must have a minimum of three (3) years post-degree teaching and/or coaching experience or five (5) years judging experience;
- The Judge should possess a personality that will assure giving constructive criticism and encouragement to the contestants;
- The Judge must evaluate her/his judging competencies carefully and indicate major and secondary areas of competency and preference;
- The Judge should possess a vocabulary that will make it possible for her/him to record her/his impressions and suggestions clearly and concisely; and,
- The Judge must have a background or experience sufficient to serve as an effective adjudicator (e.g., judging experience).
Debate Judging Requirements and Qualifications:
The Judge must meet the following minimum requirements and qualifications to be a registered MSHSL debate judge:
- The Judge should possess a personality that will assure giving constructive criticism and encouragement to the contestants;
- The Judge should possess a vocabulary that will make it possible for her/him to record her/his impressions and suggestions clearly and concisely; and,
- The Judge must have a background or experience sufficient to serve as an effective adjudicator (e.g., judging experience).
Visual Arts Judging Requirements and Qualifications:
The Judge must meet the following minimum requirements and qualifications to be a registered MSHSL visual arts judge:
- The Judge must have a minimum of three (3) post-degree teaching and experience as an artist/education;
- The Judge should possess a personality that will assure giving constructive criticism and encouragement to the contestants; and,
- The Judge should possess a vocabulary that will make it possible for her/him to record her/his impressions and suggestions clearly and concisely.
Requirements and Qualifications to Judge at Sub-Section, Section and State Contests/Festivals:
- Registered Speech, One Act Play, Debate and Music judges may be invited to judge at sub-section, section and state contests.
- At this time, those who judge Visual Arts Festivals are not required to be registered - but that will change in future years. Filling out the registration form registers you as a judge. Registered Visual Arts
judges will be given preference for judging assignments at section festivals.
Please Note the Following:
- With the ID number and password you receive when you register for the first time you can go into the "Judge's Corner" of the website at any time and update your address, phone number, email address, personal data.
You will also find other items related to Speech, One Act Play, Debate, Visual Arts and Music judges.
Registration:
- Prior to the start of the registration period each year, you will receive a letter with your ID and password as a reminder to register for the upcoming year.
- The registration process begins about September 1 (or earlier) of each year for all fine arts activities: Debate, Music, One Act Play, Speech and Visual Arts.
- Registration fees: Judges have the option of paying for one or two years. The one year registration fee is $8.00 and the two year registration is $15.00. Speech, One Act Play and Debate are completed in a combined registration.
Music and Visual Arts are separate registration. There is not charge for Visual Arts Registration.
- Judges registering in 2014-2015 for two years do not need to register or re-take the test(s) in 2015-2016, but are encouraged to check carefully for rule changes that may be made for the second year.
- Judges are required to complete a Conviction Status Verification Form as part of the Registration Process.
Testing:
Speech, One Act Play must take the test(s) for which they register with a score of 100%, and Music judges must pass the test with a score of 90% or higher. In order to be accurate when answering the test, you will need to refer to the Rules and Policies and other appropriate documents for the activities for which you are testing.
Certification Clinics:
- Speech, One Act Play and Music judges MUST attend one certification clinic. Veteran judges are encouraged to attend every two to three years to keep up to date with the ever-changing rules and procedures.
- Visual Arts judges are not required to attend a certification clinic. However, clinics are available for training.
- Debate judges are not required to attend a certification clinic.
Contracts:
- Speech, Debate, Visual Arts and One Act Play judges are responsible to contract for contests with Member schools or Regions. The MSHSL does not assign judges for section contests/festivals.
Be reminded that you act as an independent contractor when entering into a contract with the MSHSL, a member school, or an Administrative Region.
- Music judges are responsible to contract for contests with Member schools or Regions. In some sections, Carl Lipke, Music Consultant, provides a list of eligible judges taken from the Director of
Music Judges on the website for contests.
